The Holy See Press Office released yesterday (12.12.2006) a communiqué on the Holocaust. It is a reaction to a conference held recently in Tehran, Iran.Full text of the news in Czech: HERE.

Vatican: The conference 'Review of the Holocaust: Global Vision' took place in Tehran, Iran, on 11-12 December under the patronage of the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who had called the Holocaust a 'myth' in last year TV interview. With their speeches, people like David Duke, former US leader of the Ku-Klux-Klan, and several authors who have been arrested in Europe for denying the Nazis' mass murder of European Jews.

Yesterday's statement confirms that the Holocaust was 'an immense tragedy, before which it is not possible to remain indifferent' and 'a warning for consciences.' This was also stated in a document 'We Remember: A Reflection on the Shoah' of the Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews from 16 March 1998.

The Holy See statement also said that 'the past century witnessed the attempt to exterminate the Jewish people with the consequent killing of millions of Jews of all ages and social categories simply for the fact that they belonged to that people.' Thus the Church 'has a profound respect and a great compassion for the experience lived by the Jewish people during World War II. The memory of those terrible facts must remain a warning for consciences with the aim of eliminating conflicts, respecting the legitimate rights of all peoples and calling for peace in truth and justice.'

'This position,' concludes the communiqué, 'was affirmed by Pope John Paul II at the Yad Vashem Monument to Memory in Jerusalem on 23 March 2000, and confirmed by His Holiness Benedict XVI during the visit to the Auschwitz extermination camp on 28 May 2006.'
