Msgr. Karel Otčenášek Has Died

On Monday evening, May 23, 2011 the Lord withdrew from us His faithful servant, Msgr. Karel Otčenášek, archbishop and the bishop emeritus of Hradec Králové. His funeral will take place on Friday, June 3, 2011.

Prague (CZ): Msgr. Otčenášek died peacefully in sacramental graces at 9.45 p.m. on Monday, May 23, 2011 in the bishop´s residence of Hradec Králové, where he had been bearing the cross of old age. He was 91 years old.

The burial ceremony is going to take place on Friday, June 3, 2011 at 10 a.m. in the cathedral of Holy Spirit in Hradec Králové. The corpse will then be deposited in the tomb of the cathedral presbytery where several of his predecessors are expecting ressurection. A live coverage is being prepared by Noe TV.

Msgr. Karel Otčenášek was born on April 13, 1920 in České Meziříčí. All his life, including his studies in Prague, preparation for priesthood in Rome, episcopal consecration, imprisonment and exile, eight-year-long service in the diocese of Hradec Králové and quiet life in retirement, was a testimony to the evangelical message expressed in the notorious motto 'Per crucem ad lucem - Through cross towards light'. His pastoral wisdom had grown from the ideal of universal friendship among all people and of all people with God. The awareness of belonging with others was the light, strength and encouragement of his life.
