The Shining Church Night
This, already ninth year will offer a varied cultural and spiritual program organized by thousands of volunteers from different parishes. “Almost three thousand churches will open just in Prague and central Bohemia,” Michal Němeček, director of the Prague Archbishopric Pastoral centre says and ads that the interest in the Church Night is immense: Last year we noted around 130 thousand visitor entrances in central Bohemia, in the entire Czech republic about half million incomings.

Pope Francis blessed the painting of Our Lady of Lidice
On Wednesday, May 31, 2017, in Rome, Pope Francis blesses the painting of Our Lady of Lidice, created by Czech painter Zdirad Čech. At the same time, the Holy Father met Veronika Rýmonová, a survival of the Lidice massacre, as a part of the commemoration of the tragedy’s 75th anniversary.

New auxiliary bishop ordained for Ostrava-Opava
An unprecedented event took place in the cathedral of the Holy Savior in Ostrava on Sunday, May 28, 2017: Msgr. Martin David, the very first auxiliary bishop for the diocese of Ostrava-Opava, received episcopal ordination.

109th plenary meeting of the Czech bishops: Family is our treasure
On 25–26 April 2017, the 109th plenary meeting of the Czech Bishops’ Conference took place in Špindlerův Mlýn. Its participants focused on the issues of family and evangelization, they discussed the pastoral care of university students and of the police.

New auxiliary bishop appointed
A historic moment took place on Friday 7th April 2017 in Ostrava: few minutes after midday, Apostolic Nuncio Giuseppe Leanza announced the name of a new auxiliary bishop for the Diocese of Ostrava and Opava, the youngest diocese in the Czech Republic. The position would be held by the current vicar general, Msgr. Martin David.

Farewell to everyone...
Today shortly after 1 p.m., the body of Cardinal Miloslav Vlk has been laid into the archbishops' sepulchre in the cathedral of Sts. Vitus, Wenceslas and Adalbert in Prague, thus concluding the three-day-long farewell with the late archbishop emeritus of Prague.

Today, on 18th March 2017, Cardinal Miloslav Vlk, archbishop emeritus of Prague, has died. May he rest in peace. Details concerning his funeral will be published in due time.

Bishops’ plenary: Family is a basic cell for the society and the Church
On January 24–25, 2017, the 108th plenary meeting of the bishops of the Czech Republic and the representatives of men and women religious orders took place in Prague. Among others, it focused on families and the Charity; bishops also prayed for Cardinal Miloslav Vlk and took part in an ecumenical worship.

Pavel Konzbul to Serve as the New Auxiliary Bishop of Brno
On Saturday, 21 May 2016, on the anniversary of the consecration of St. Peter and Paul´s Cathedral, the main church in the Diocese of Brno, The Holy Father Pope Francis appointed the present parish priest at St. Peter and Paul´s Cathedral, Fr. Pavel Konzbul, as the new Auxiliary Bishop of Brno.

Stanislav Přibyl new Secretary General of the bishops’ conference
A new secretary general of the Czech Bishops’ Conference was elected on Apr. 19, 2016, during the conference’s 105th plenary that takes place in Hejnice, North Bohemia – Father Stanislav Přibyl, current vicar general of the Litoměřice diocese. He will start working at the conference’s secretariat on May 1 and take up his office on Oct. 1.
