Curriculum vitae
He was born on 3 October 1939 in Trest. In 1957 he entered the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the Charles University in Prague. He specialized in Mathematical Statistics and graduated in 1962.
In 1962-1964 he did his compulsory military service in Eastern Slovakia, then he worked in the State Research Institute of the Glass Industry and later in the Pedagogical Institute of the Czechoslovakian Academy of Sciences.
In 1966 he entered the Ss Cyril and Methodius' Faculty in Litomerice. He was ordained on 27 June 1970 in Prague. He served in Marianske Lazne, from 1972 he was a parish vicar at the church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Frantiskovy Lazne.
On 17 March 1990 he was appointed titular bishop of Aggar and auxiliary bishop of Prague. He was ordained by Cardinal Frantisek Tomasek on 7 April 1990. On 31 May 1993 he was appointed 1st bishop of the new diocese of Plzen.
From 1990 to 1993 he was general secretary of the Czech Bishops' Conference. He is responsible for the Laity, Ecumenism, and Informatics.
