The diocese was founded in 973 after the agreement of Czech Duke Boleslav II with Emperor Otto I and Bishop of Regensburg St Wolfgang. On 30 April 1344, Pope Clement VI raised Prague Diocese to Archdiocese and thus made independent ecclesiastical province Bohemia and Moravia.
