Curriculum vitae

He was born on 8 Oct 1948 in Karlovy Vary. He has five siblings, his brother Pavel is also a priest and his sister Marie is a religious. Having finished a high school of geodesy in Prague, he entered the Ss Cyril and Methodius Faculty of Theology in Litomerice. He was ordained priest on 26 Jun 1973 in Prague by Bishop Frantisek Tomasek.

In 1973-1990 he served in several parishes of the Prague archdiocese. Since 1990 he was vice-rector and since 1993 rector of the Prague archbishop's seminary. In 1997-2002 he again administered some parishes and on 1 Jan 2003 he was appointed vicar general of the Diocese of Ceske Budejovice.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed Jan Baxant bishop of Litomerice on 4 Oct 2008. He received episcopal ordination from Cardinal Miloslav Vlk on 22 Nov 2008 in Litomerice. He speaks German, French, Italian and Russian.
